South African supermarket and retail chains are spreading across the African continent at a rapid pace. Retail giant Shoprite opened it’s first branch in Zambia in 1995 and has since opened 22 stores across the country. Other South African chains have since joined and in the last few years 9 shopping malls have opened in Lusaka and another 3 are under construction, becoming many shoppers first choice over the traditional outdoor market and local produce sellers. This series looks at the rise of these South African supermarkets in Zambia through the people that shop there.- Shot for the Financial Times Weekend Magazine
